The truth was, Large group didn't always work. On weeks when I and my fellow volunteers put a lot of effort into it - it went pretty well. On weeks were we didn't, it was hit or miss. Sometimes we could wing it and pull it off, sometimes it just wasn't happening. Most of the time I led large group cause that seemed to be my comfort area. I enjoyed talking to the whole group and I had a knack for translating material in to kid speak. But there were some weeks that just didn't happen.
On a good week - we'd spend about 20-25 minutes in large group with a leader presenting the info. This might be through a "lecture" or through a drama of some sort. We did a lot of impromptu dramas where the kids participated by putting on a hat/shirt/sign and then reading a short script. These were always a success because kids enjoy being silly.
Another big hit was a drama where a guest came in. Sometimes the guest would be on of our volunteers who didn't normally do large group - so having them speak during this time was different and special. Other times it could be a teacher or volunteer from another area entirely. In those cases, just the fact that it was someone new got their attention.
Weeks when it was a fail normally began with little or no planning. They also normally had one of our regular volunteers absent. Even having a small group leader who is not involved in the large group time at all absent would affect the entire group.
On those weeks - we just did the best we could. Sometimes we read the lesson aloud from the bible, sometimes we had the kids take turns telling it in their own words. Most of time those lessons were shorter and we made up the time in small groups.
